📖 Lasting Influence

His ideas shaped intellectual traditions for centuries and became especially influential in medieval philosophy and science.

Aristotle

Philosopher, teacher and natural investigator

✦ ✦ ✦

Aristotle was born in 384 BCE in Stagira, a Greek city in the region of Macedonia. His father, Nicomachus, was associated with the Macedonian royal court as a physician.

As a young man Aristotle travelled to Athens and joined Plato's Academy, where he studied and worked for many years.

After leaving Athens, Aristotle spent time in different parts of the Greek world before becoming associated with the education of the young Alexander of Macedon.

He later returned to Athens and established his own school, the Lyceum, where philosophical and scientific investigations were conducted.

Understanding the World

Logic, knowledge and the nature of reality

✦ ✦ ✦
LOGIC

Reasoning

Aristotle developed influential systems for analysing arguments and reasoning, helping establish formal logic as a major field of study.

METAPHYSICS

Reality

His philosophical writings examined existence, substance, causation and the fundamental nature of reality.

KNOWLEDGE

Observation

Aristotle placed importance on observation, classification and systematic investigation when studying the natural world.

The Good Life

Virtue, character and human flourishing

✦ ✦ ✦

Aristotle's ethical philosophy focused on how human beings could develop good character and live a flourishing life.

In the Nicomachean Ethics, he examined virtues such as courage, justice, generosity and practical wisdom.

He argued that ethical excellence was closely related to developing good habits and finding appropriate balance in one's actions.

His approach became one of the major foundations of what is now known as virtue ethics.

Knowledge Through Inquiry

✦ ───────── ✦

Aristotle investigated a remarkable range of subjects, attempting to organize knowledge into systematic fields of study.

His surviving works and fragments cover subjects including philosophy, biology, politics, rhetoric, poetry, physics and ethics.

His willingness to examine different aspects of the natural and human worlds helped establish a tradition of systematic intellectual inquiry.

The Organized State

Aristotle's study of political communities

✦ ✦ ✦
POLITICS

The Polis

Aristotle examined the Greek city-state and considered political organization an important part of human social life.

CITIZENSHIP

Civic Life

His political writings explored citizenship, constitutions, political participation and the responsibilities of communities.

CONSTITUTIONS

Political Systems

Aristotle compared different forms of government and investigated how political systems could become stable or deteriorate.

Studying the Natural World

Observation and classification

✦ ✦ ✦

Aristotle wrote extensively about animals and the natural world. His biological writings contain observations and classifications of numerous species.

He also investigated questions concerning motion, change, matter and the structure of the cosmos.

Some of his scientific conclusions were later shown to be incorrect, but his systematic approach to collecting and organizing knowledge had a lasting influence on the history of natural philosophy.

His work demonstrates the intellectual ambition of attempting to understand nature through organized investigation and reasoning.

The Legacy of Aristotle

✦ ───────── ✦

Aristotle became one of the most influential philosophers in world history. His writings shaped philosophical traditions across Europe, the Middle East and beyond.

His works were studied and commented upon by major thinkers in later Greek, Roman, Islamic and European intellectual traditions.

Although many of his scientific conclusions were eventually revised, his influence on logic, philosophy, ethics, politics and the study of nature remains significant.
