Confucius, traditionally known in Chinese as Kongzi, was born around 551 BCE in the state of Lu during the Eastern Zhou period.
His early life was shaped by a period of political instability in which the authority of the Zhou dynasty had weakened and different states competed for power.
Confucius became a teacher and attracted students through his emphasis on learning, personal discipline and moral development.
He also held government positions and hoped that rulers would use moral leadership to create a more stable and harmonious society.
Although he did not establish a political dynasty, his teachings were preserved by later generations and became the foundation of a major intellectual tradition.
