Cyrus II was a Persian ruler who lived during the sixth century BCE. He began as the ruler of Anshan, a Persian kingdom in southwestern Iran, and eventually created an empire that stretched across a vast part of the ancient Near East.
Ancient sources portray Cyrus as an ambitious military leader, but also as a ruler capable of incorporating conquered peoples into his empire. His reputation developed through Persian, Babylonian, Greek and biblical traditions, which do not always agree with one another.
Because accounts about his early life were written at different times and from different perspectives, some details of Cyrus's childhood and family background remain uncertain.
