Ferdinand Magellan was born around 1480 in Portugal. He became involved in maritime expeditions during the Portuguese Age of Exploration.
He sailed in the Indian Ocean and participated in Portuguese expeditions in Asia and Africa, gaining experience in navigation and military affairs.
Magellan later entered the service of the Spanish monarchy after disagreements with the Portuguese crown.
He proposed reaching the Spice Islands by sailing westward, believing that a route through the Americas could provide access to the Pacific and eventually the islands of Southeast Asia.
King Charles I of Spain approved the expedition, which departed in 1519 with five ships.
