The Indus civilization developed from earlier farming and village communities in South Asia. Over time, some settlements became larger and increasingly complex.
During the Mature Harappan period, beginning around 2600 BCE, large urban centers appeared across a broad region. Archaeologists use the term "Harappan civilization" because Harappa was one of the first sites to be excavated and recognized as part of this wider cultural tradition.
The civilization was not limited to a single city. Hundreds of settlements of different sizes have been identified across the region.
