Before industrialization, much manufacturing was carried out by skilled craftspeople in workshops or through domestic systems in which families produced goods in their homes.

Agriculture remained central to the economy, while many communities depended on seasonal work and traditional methods of production.

Improvements in agriculture, population growth, expanding trade and developing financial institutions helped create conditions in which industrial production could expand.

Britain also possessed substantial coal and iron resources, which became increasingly important as machines and steam technology developed.

Spinning Jenny

Developed by James Hargreaves in the 1760s, the spinning jenny allowed one worker to operate multiple spindles and greatly increased yarn production.

Improvements to steam engines, particularly those associated with James Watt, made steam power increasingly useful for industry and transportation.

Industrialization gradually spread from Britain to other parts of Europe, North America and eventually many other regions.

Belgium, France, Germany and other European states developed important industrial sectors during the nineteenth century, while the United States also experienced rapid industrial growth.

The process was not identical everywhere. Different regions industrialized at different speeds depending on their resources, institutions, markets, technology and transportation networks.
