Mehmed II was born in 1432 in Edirne, then one of the principal centers of the Ottoman state. He was the son of Sultan Murad II.
Mehmed first became sultan at a young age in 1444. Political and military difficulties soon led his father to resume the throne. Mehmed returned to power in 1451 following Murad II's death.
From the beginning of his second reign, Mehmed focused on strengthening Ottoman military power and preparing for the conquest of Constantinople.
