Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica, shortly after the island became part of France. He received military education in mainland France and became an artillery officer.

The political upheaval of the French Revolution created opportunities for talented military officers. Napoleon gained recognition through his role in French military campaigns during the revolutionary period.

His successful campaign in Italy between 1796 and 1797 established him as a major military figure. He later led the French expedition to Egypt before returning to France.

In 1799, Napoleon took part in the coup of 18 Brumaire and became First Consul of France. He gradually concentrated political authority in his own hands.

In 1804, Napoleon was proclaimed Emperor of the French, beginning a new stage of French political and military expansion.

Napoleon's armies fought numerous coalitions formed by European powers opposed to French expansion. His victories brought large parts of continental Europe under French influence.

In 1805, Napoleon defeated the forces of Austria and Russia at the Battle of Austerlitz, one of his most celebrated victories.

French victories continued during campaigns across Central Europe, although resistance against French rule also grew.

Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 ended in a disastrous retreat. The enormous losses weakened the French military position and encouraged new coalitions against him.

After his defeat in the War of the Sixth Coalition, Napoleon abdicated in 1814. He briefly returned to power in 1815 during the Hundred Days before his final defeat at Waterloo.

The Battle of Austerlitz, fought on 2 December 1805, became one of Napoleon's most famous victories.

French forces defeated a combined Austrian and Russian army, strengthening Napoleon's position in continental Europe.

His reforms also had long-lasting consequences. The Napoleonic Code, administrative reforms and educational policies influenced institutions in France and other parts of Europe.

At the same time, his rule involved authoritarian government, prolonged warfare and enormous human losses. His historical legacy is therefore complex and continues to be debated.

Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo in 1815 ended his attempt to restore his empire and marked the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars.
