Raja Raja Chola I was born as Arulmozhi Varman, a member of the Chola royal family. He belonged to a dynasty that had been rebuilding its power in southern India.
He became ruler of the Chola kingdom in approximately 985 CE. During his reign, he reorganized the kingdom's administration and pursued an ambitious programme of military expansion.
His reign marked a major turning point in Chola history. The Chola state developed into a large and well-organized empire with influence across much of southern India.
